The mural was created by Rosmunda as part of the Street Art Festival in Mostar.
In mythology, the Sphinx was the fearsome monster that plagued the city of Thebes, posing riddles to its inhabitants, those who could not answer were devoured. What may seem at first deeply unsettling conceals something precious: the importance of inquiry, of asking questions, of using intelligence to make sense of reality.
Critical thinking is what makes us conscious human beings. The sphinx sleeps, as does the conscience of those who stop questioning and passively accept the world as it is.
In Bosnia, many questions still await an answer. This work is a wish, that the sphinx may finally awaken, to demand explanations from those who owe them, and to restore a voice to collective memory.
